LOVE IS NOT SELFISHNESS

Wow! I just listened to a powerful message by Bishop Michael Curry, ‘Love is the Way’ on the Compassionate Christianity website.  I started re-thinking my rationalizations…

Yesterday I posted ‘The Bride Doll’ on my blog. I reprimanded my parents for not handling the situation better.  In my 'About Me' biography, I said that my parents did not know the love of Jesus, because they had both been brought up in very strict biblical homes…one had a Quaker preacher for a grandfather.

Bishop Curry helped me remember what my parents had actually told me. “We are not going to force any religion on you. We married each other because we both wanted to experience LOVE.” They did. Yes, there was arguing and disagreements. But they always made up. They raised my sister and I to LOVE each other, to be kind to everyone, to think of others first, TO NOT BE SELFISH, and to, generally, be good people. Isn’t that what Jesus tells us to do?

Since I became a Christian, I have been feeling sort of cheated by my parents, because I didn’t know about the Bible. I didn’t understand Jesus’ purpose on the cross. I actually didn’t go to church for decades because I didn’t want to show my ignorance in not knowing the songs that everyone else knew by heart!

I was so wrong! THAT WAS A SELFISH ATTITUDE! I am so sorry, Mom and Dad! They were good people.  It wasn’t their fault that they didn’t understand You, Jesus…their parents’ teachings were based on the Old Testament.  At least Jesus helped them understand that love is more important.  They didn’t realize it was Jesus working in their lives…protecting them…raising a generation who would seek Jesus and find Him!

If you don’t know Jesus, it is time you introduced yourself by recognizing He is God, humbly confessing your sins, knowing He will forgive them all, and start living Christlike.

Mattthew 22:36 “Teacher, which is the greatest commandment in the Law?”
37 Jesus replied: “ ‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’
38 This is the first and greatest commandment.
39 And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’
40 All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments.”

   God loves us all!
